Zanzibar Jozani Forest Tour - Half Day Excursion (up to 3hrs)

Zanzibar Jozani forest tour is a 3-hours guided tour. The tour will take you to the Jozani natural forest (it is the only natural forest in Zanzibar Island). The forest is located in the central east region of Zanzibar Island. Just about a 20min drive from Stone Town. It is a narrow neck of land between the Chwaka Bay in the north and Uzi Bay to the south. It contains about 100 tree species from a total of 43 families. It has a gazzetted area over 2512 ha that includes the whole ground water forest, coral rag forest and salt marsh area.

Although until recently only the forest was gazzetted, the area together with the adjacent Chwaka Bay forest have been converted into a reserve known as Jozani Chwaka Bay Conservation Area (JCBCA). The recent move has added the rich mangrove forests of the Chwaka bay into the reserve making the ecosystem the largest conservation area in Zanzibar.

Red colobuses are Old World monkeys of the subgenus Piliocolobus in genus Procolobus. Some authors elevate Piliocolobus to a full genus, limiting Procolobus to the olive colobus. They are closely related to the black-and-white colobus monkeys (genus Colobus) and some species are often found in groups with the blue monkey. The western red colobus is frequently hunted by the common chimpanzee.

The members of this subgenus are found in western, central and eastern Africa, and the species have largely allo- or parapatric distributions. Most are restricted to humid forests, but the Zanzibar red colobus prefers coastal thickets and scrub. Red colobuses are primarily arboreal and are highly sensitive to hunting and habitat destruction, and have been referred to as probably the most threatened taxonomic group of primates in Africa as of 2008, all species except the Central African red colobus are assessed by the IUCN as Endangered or Critically Endangered.

Groups often establish a dominance hierarchy determined by aggressive behavior. Food, grooming, and sexual partners are distributed amongst higher ranking individuals initially, followed by lower ranking individuals

A red colobus monkey, unlike the Black and White Colobus, are a rain forest specie which are now confined to very small areas of equatorial forest in tropical Africa. It is therefore a rare treat to be able to ONLY see them here at the Jozani forest.

The Mangrove Swamp & Other Wildlife

The Jozani forest also accommodates a large mangrove swamp and a tract of natural forest that is home to a few unique species including the Sykes monkey, bush babies, Ader's duiker (which are found only in Jozani and Sokoke Forest along the Kenya's coast), hyraxes, over 50 species of butterfly and 40 species of birds. The smaller trees and shrubs make several sub canopies under the highest forest canopy. The Jozani tour will walk you through the nature trail of the Jozani forest.
